Senior GL Accountant (for US entities)

PRIMARY PURPOSE

We are looking for a Senior General Ledger Accountant to join our well-established Shared Service Center in Karlín.

In this role, you will take ownership of General Ledger activities for assigned North American entities and play a key role in the monthly close, balance sheet accuracy, internal controls, audit support, and continuous process improvement. You will work closely with colleagues in Prague and business partners in North America, while also supporting and guiding junior team members.

You will support Merisant, a global food company dedicated to promoting healthier lifestyles through a broad portfolio of trusted sweetener and food brands. We are part of the Whole Earth Brands / Sweet Oak Group.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Own assigned General Ledger areas and perform the full scope of accounting activities for North American entities.
• Perform month-end and year-end close activities, including accruals, deferrals, prepayments, payroll entries, intercompany transactions, commissions, sales provisions, inventory accounting, and fixed assets.
• Prepare and review journal entries, ensuring appropriate supporting documentation, approval, and compliance with company policies.
• Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations, investigate variances, and ensure timely resolution of open items.
• Review trial balances and perform closing controls to confirm completeness and accuracy of financial results.
• Support inventory accounting, including reconciliations, provisions, and coordination with relevant business teams.
• Coordinate intercompany accounting and reconciliations, including follow-up on differences with counterparties.
• Own assigned SOX controls and ensure that control evidence is complete, accurate, and submitted on time.
• Prepare supporting documentation and respond to requests from internal and external auditors.
• Cooperate with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Tax, FP&A, and other internal stakeholders to resolve accounting issues.
• Support and review the work of junior colleagues, provide guidance, and act as a subject matter expert for assigned processes.
• Provide backup for other General Ledger team members during close and periods of absence.
• Prepare ad hoc reports and analyses requested by management.
• Identify opportunities for standardization, automation, and process improvement, and actively support their implementation.
• Safeguard company information by maintaining confidentiality at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• At least 4 years of experience in General Ledger or a similar accounting role, ideally within a Shared Service Center or international environment.
• Strong knowledge of accounting principles, month-end close, balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, prepayments, fixed assets, and intercompany accounting.
• Experience with US GAAP and SOX controls is preferred.
• Education in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Fluent English, as we operate in a global, international environment.
• Strong Excel skills, including PivotTables, lookups, and data analysis.
• ERP experience is required. Experience with SAP or Microsoft Dynamics 365 is an advantage.
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities, meet closing deadlines, and communicate issues proactively.
• A collaborative team player who is responsible, reliable, and comfortable guiding junior colleagues.
