ARTIST TECHNICIAN

Position Summary:

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and well-qualified Artist Technician to become an integral member of our vibrant Arts Faculty. The ideal candidate will be a practicing Visual Artist with genuine enthusiasm for working with young people, and a broad interest in the Arts as a whole—extending their passion beyond the studio to practically support our wider calendar of exhibitions, performances and festivals. Given our collaborative environment in the Arts, a background or interest in Theatre and Music would be a distinct advantage, as we highly value versatile creative expertise that can support projects across the entire faculty.

This is a role for a motivated individual who balances "behind-the-scenes" operational reliability and organisation with a warm, student-facing presence. You will be as comfortable preparing materials and maintaining functional art studios as you are mentoring pupils through technically challenging projects or expanding the profile of the department with new extra-curricular clubs. As a valued member of the College’s creative community, you will possess the interpersonal skills to foster healthy relationships at all levels, ensuring our students are supported to reach their full creative potential within a thriving and busy faculty.

MAIN DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Engagement & Co-Curricular Life

• Lead extra-curricular clubs with the aim of offering new creative specialisms (3D design, textiles, fashion or other specialised techniques).
• Provide support in practical classes, as appropriate to the daily Art department timetable.
• Support the wider Arts co-curriculum; available for evening events (essential for twice yearly exhibitions, highly desirable for performances and concerts)
• Collaborate with Drama and/or Music departments as creative opportunities arise.

Technical Artistic Support

• Mentor students who are working with more specialised equipment and technical guidance on a range of mixed-media projects.
• Maintain studios in a clean, safe, and fully functional condition

Exhibition, Display & Curation

• Assist with practical logistics and installation of time-pressured "pop-up" external/assessment exhibitions and also permanent internal displays. Mount, frame, dismantle and refresh student artwork.
• Photograph and document work for exam board submissions and archives.
• Generate occasional visual content for social media and departmental promotion.

Contract Term: Permanent contract offered after a two-year period

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

Essential Qualifications and Experience

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in a Visual Arts or Design specialism.
• Good working knowledge of health and safety standards within an Art studio or workshop environment.
• Working fluency in English, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally in an educational setting.
• Strong organisational skills and competence in using Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, etc.).
• The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary Arts team.

Desirable Experience and Skills

• Educational Background: Previous experience working within an Art department or an Arts Faculty in an educational institution.
• Evidence of an active and current creative practice as a Visual Artist.
• A proven interest in Theatre and/or Music, and a willingness to apply technical skills to set design or performance support.
• Comfort and experience working within a bilingual school context which is internationally facing, liberal, and inclusive.
• A genuine interest in supporting the development of young people and helping them reach their full creative potential.
