The Data Engineer designs, operates and continuously improves the data platforms and
processing workflows that support the management, preservation, discovery and use of
scientific data at ELI Beamlines. The role combines hands-on administration of databases,
storage systems with the development of reliable data pipelines and data-quality controls,
and governed data products for analytics, Data and AI projects. The position ensures that data
services are secure, observable, scalable, documented and recoverable throughout their
lifecycle.

What you will do:
• Operate and maintain database, metadata and storage services supporting scientific
data management and archiving.
• Design and manage data pipelines for data ingestion, validation, transformation and
publication.
• Develop and maintain data-processing workflows, APIs and integrations.
• Ensure data quality through automated validation, monitoring and issue resolution.
• Prepare secure, documented datasets for analytics, machine learning and other Data
and AI initiatives.
• Administer Apache Cassandra, MySQL, Apache Jena and S3-compatible object storage
across different environments.
• Implement monitoring, logging, backup, recovery and disaster-recovery procedures.
• Troubleshoot incidents, optimise performance and ensure platform reliability,
security and scalability.
• Automate operational tasks and maintain technical documentation.
• Collaborate with research and application teams to improve data services and
infrastructure.

What we expect:
• University degree in computer science, data engineering, software engineering,
information systems or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Demonstrated experience operating production data platforms and developing
reliable data-processing or integration solutions.
• Strong SQL skills and practical experience with Python or a comparable language for
data processing, automation, testing and integration.
• Good understanding of ETL and ELT patterns, data modelling, APIs, workflow
orchestration, schema management, data quality and data observability.
• Hands-on experience with relevant technologies such as Apache Cassandra, MySQL,
RDF/SPARQL and Apache Jena, and S3-compatible object storage; experience with
distributed systems is an advantage.
• Experience with Linux, networking fundamentals, monitoring and logging tools such
as Prometheus and Zabbix, performance analysis, capacity planning and incident
troubleshooting.
• Experience with Git, automated testing, CI/CD, configuration management, containers
or infrastructure as code is desirable.
