Overall purpose of the position:

The primary purpose of this role is to provide individualized support to a student with documented academic, social-emotional, and/or medical needs, as outlined in a comprehensive report indicating the necessity for individualized support and programming. The Personal Learning Assistant will follow a Student Support Plan (SSP) to address specific goals and will supervise the student according to the SSP and individual schedule.

The Personal Learning Assistant will collaborate closely with the Learning Support Teacher, Student Support Coordinator, classroom teacher, and other members of the student's school team to ensure the student's needs are met effectively.

Key responsibilities:

• Provide individualized instruction and guidance, tailored to the student's specific plan.
• Assist the student to develop self-management skills during school time in different settings.
• Collaborate with the classroom teacher and Learning Support Teacher to ensure the student’s goals are met.
• Support the student in developing social skills and appropriate behavior in the classroom and during interactions with peers.
• Encourage the student to actively participate in classroom activities, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion within the school community.
• Keep accurate records of the student’s academic, social-emotional, and behavioral progress.
• Communicate regularly with the Student Support Team to provide updates and recommendations for continued support.
• Support communication efforts by directing all parent or guardian inquiries to the classroom teacher or case manager ensuring consistency and clarity in home-school collaboration.
• Ensure the student's health and safety by adhering to all relevant health and safety protocols and guidelines.
• Participate in faculty meetings and professional development sessions as required by the supervisor to enhance support strategies and best practices.
• Support the student in becoming more independent across academics, self-management, and social development.
• Support the understanding and implementation of UDL practice at ISP

Education and training preferred:

• Minimum secondary education, but BA or MA degree is an advantage
• Education in the areas of pedagogy, special education or psychology preferred
• Proven experience working with children in an inclusive education setting
